[EN] Eberhard Helmrich was assigned in 1941 as chief economic officer for the Drohobycz area in Galicia. He protected Poles from persecution and saved the lives of many Jews from extermination. Yad Vashem recognized him as a Righteous Among the Nations.
In the same house with him lived his Polish driver, Jan Wojnar, with his family. Jan Wojnar was not only informed about Helmrich’s rescue activities, but also took an active part in them. He drove Jews to the border at his own risk so that they could flee. He undertook these trips accompanied by Helmrich or alone.

Recently we have found this 70 years old self information of Eberhard Helmrich in the Landesarchiv Schleswig-Holstein. In it he also reminds of the selfless and dangerous help of Jan Wojnar, who was arrested for it. In this document we have now found the address of Jan Wojnar after the war – so he survived. We therefore commemorate the Polish saviour Jan Wojnar on this very occasion.

[DE] Eberhard Helmrich wurde 1941 als Gebietslandwirt für den Bereich Drohobycz in Galizien eingesetzt. Er schützte Polen vor der Verfolgung und rettete das Leben vieler Juden vor der Vernichtung. Dafür wurde er von Yad Vashem als Gerechter unter den Völkern anerkannt.
Im gleichen Haus mit ihm wohnte sein polnischer Fahrer, Jan Wojnar, mit seiner Familie. Jan Wojnar war nicht nur unterrichtet über die Rettungsaktivitäten Helmrichs, sondern nahm aktiv daran teil. Er fuhr unter eigener Lebensgefahr Juden zur Grenze, damit sie fliehen konnten. Diese Fahrten unterernahm er in Begleitung Helmrichs, oder auch alleine.
Vor kurzer Zeit haben wir im Landesarchiv Schleswig-Holstein diese 70 Jahre alte Selbstauskunft Eberhard Helmrichs gefunden. Darin erinnert er auch an die selbstlose und lebensgefährliche Hilfe von Jan Wojnar, der dafür verhaftet wurde. In diesem Dokument haben wir jetzt die Adresse von Jan Wojnar nach dem Kriege gefunden – er hat also überlebt. Wir gedenken aus diesem besonderen Anlass deshalb auch des polnischen Retters Jan Wojnar.

[PL] Eberhard Helmrich został zatrudniony w 1941 roku jako Kreislandwirt w i kierował Urzędem d/s Wyżywienia i Rolnictwa na obszarze Drohobycza. Bronił Polaków przed prześladowaniami i ratował życie Zydów przed Zagładą. Za to został wyróżniony odznaczeniem Sprawiedliwy wśród Narodów Swiata. W tym samym budynku, z nim, mieszkał również jego polski kierowca Jan Wojnar z rodziną. Jan Wojnar nie tylko wiedział o niebezpiecznej działalności Helmricha, ale aktywnie się w nią angażował. Ryzykując własnym życiem przewoził Zydów do granicy, by mogli uciec.Te podróże odbywał w towarzystwie Helmricha, ale również sam.

Niedawno znaleźliśmy w archiwum Schlezwiku Holsztyna sprawozdanie sporządzone przed 70 laty przez samego Eberharda Helmricha. Wspomina w nim bezinteresowną, niebezpieczną dla życia pomoc Jana Wojnara, który zresztą z tego powodu został póżniej aresztowany. W tym dokumencie znajdował się również adres, pod którym Jan Wojnar mieszkał po wojnie, a to oznacza, że przeżył.

Wspominamy więc z tej szczególnej okazji wspaniałego Polaka, który uratował wielu Zydow
