Preliminary remark

Only after extensive examination of testimonies and documents does Yad Vashem recognize non-Jewish saviors as “ Righteous among the Nations“. This care is absolutely appropriate, as there have always been attempts by people with an addiction to prestige and also by perpetrators to distinguish themselves as Jewish saviours.

Nevertheless, we will broaden the term here. 1. also Jewish saviours are to be honoured. 2 Often the helpers of the Righteous, who have also risked their lives, are ignored. 3 And finally, the forgotten heroes who have paid for their human actions with their lives should also be portrayed. It doesn’t matter whether their rescue attempt was successful, but that they tried it out of human decency.
